Alicante works as a day out on foot, but the three things people come back talking about are the castle at sunset, the crossing to Tabarca and the run inland to Guadalest. Guides work in English and Spanish.

Santa Bárbara castle
It sits on Mount Benacantil right above the city. There is a lift up from Postiguet beach, so it is not the climb people expect — pushchairs and wheelchairs manage fine. Late afternoon is the time to go: the light is better and the heat has gone.
A day on foot
Morning in the old town and the central market, rice for lunch in the Santa Cruz quarter, the castle in the afternoon and sunset on the Explanada. If you are off a cruise ship, the port is a ten-minute walk from the centre and there is time for the walking tour and the castle before you sail.
Getting here
The airport is 15 minutes away — see Alicante airport transfers. From Torrevieja it is 50 minutes on the AP-7, and from Benidorm the TRAM tram runs along the coast and is worth doing for the ride itself.
If you come in June
From 20 to 24 June Alicante is in the middle of the Hogueras de San Juan, the bonfires festival: huge satirical monuments built in every district, a daily gunpowder mascletà in the Plaza de los Luceros, and all of it burned at midnight on the 24th. It is the best week of the year to visit and also the fullest, with the centre closed to traffic and accommodation booked months ahead.
Common questions
Is the walking tour really free?
You pay what you think at the end. Book a place anyway — groups are capped at 20.
Is Tabarca worth it in a day?
Yes if you go in the morning. The boat takes an hour from Alicante; from Santa Pola it is 25 minutes and cheaper.
