Guadalest is the mountain village built around a castle on a rock, about an hour and a half inland from the coast. The Algar Waterfalls sit in the same valley — freshwater pools you can swim in. The two go together as one long day.

What the day looks like
Morning in Guadalest: the tunnel cut through the rock into the old village, the castle, and the view down over the reservoir, which is an improbable turquoise. Then the Algar valley for the waterfalls — bring swimwear and something for your feet, the rock is sharp. On the longer route the day finishes in Altea, with the blue-domed church and the white streets, at the hour when the light is best.
Frequently asked questions
Can you swim at the Algar Waterfalls?
Yes, in the natural pools along the marked route. The water is cold all year — it comes off the mountain.
How far is Guadalest from Alicante?
Around 65 km inland, roughly an hour and a half by road because the last stretch is mountain roads.
