La costa y la ciudad de Alicante vistas desde lo alto

The castle sits on top of Mount Benacantil, 166 metres straight above the Postiguet beach, and it is the one thing everybody in Alicante tells you to do. Entry is free. What you pay for is the way up.

The lift is the option most people miss. It is cut into the rock, entered from the seafront road opposite the beach, and it puts you at the top in under a minute.

Walking up

You can walk from the Santa Cruz quarter — around 30 minutes of steady climbing with no shade for most of it. Fine early or late; unpleasant at midday in summer. Coming down on foot is the better half of the deal: the path drops through the old town.
