Benidorm Island is a rock four kilometres offshore, inside the Serra Gelada natural park. Boats reach it from the port in 15 to 20 minutes, and it is the best snorkelling in the area — the water is far clearer than off the town beaches and there is rock wall straight off the shore.

Boats leave Benidorm port between 10:00 and 18:00, every 30 to 60 minutes depending on the season. In summer and at Easter it is worth booking; the rest of the year you can turn up. Some of the boats have glass bottoms, which with children makes the crossing itself part of the trip.

What there is to do

A short path climbs to the top, with views over the whole bay and the Benidorm skyline from the sea — a better photograph than anything from the promenade. Down below the swimming area is rocky and clear, good for snorkelling and for diving. It is also a seabird nesting site, so some sections are fenced off and should be left alone.

What to bring

Water shoes or sandals, because there is no sand. Mask and snorkel if you have them — hire on the island is not guaranteed. Water, something to eat, sun cream and comfortable shoes for the path. You cannot stay overnight.
