There are two tourist train routes in Torrevieja and they are easy to confuse. One runs along the coast, the other goes into the salt pans. Both leave from the same point on Paseo de la Libertad, opposite Plaza Waldo Calero, and both have an audio guide on board.

Which one to take
If you are only doing one, take the salt route. It drives into the working salina and stops for twenty minutes so you get out and stand next to the pink lagoon, the old crystallisation pans and the salt mountains. In season you see flamingos from the train itself.
The beaches route heads north past La Mata, the lagoon nature park and the old watchtowers, and does not stop anywhere. It is shorter and cheaper and works as a first look at the town, but it is the lesser of the two.
Times
First departure is 10:30, then roughly every 45 minutes. Frequency drops outside high season, so check at the ticket booth on the day. The train is fully wheelchair accessible.
Languages
The beaches route has audio in Spanish, English, German and French. The salt route adds Chinese and Russian.
Who it suits
It is one of the easiest outings here with small children, pushchairs or grandparents — no walking, shade over the seats and an hour is about the right length. If you want the salina properly, on foot and with a guide, take the guided walk instead.

Do we need to book?
Normally no, you buy at the booth before boarding. In August the first morning departures do fill.
Is this the same as the guided salt lakes tour?
No. The train makes a short stop; the guided walk covers the salina and the lagoon on foot with far more time.
Can we get off and catch a later train?
No, it is a single circuit and you stay with it.
